Cambridge biotech giant Genzyme has finally agreed to be purchased by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis following nine months of negotiations. The price tag: $20 billion.

The future of Genzyme's 4,500 Massachusetts employees remains unclear, but there were hints about that Wednesday when the CEOs of both companies appeared together in public for the first time at Genzyme's headquarters in Kendall Square.
