Groton Marine, Killed in Afghanistan, Laid To Rest

Groton native Marine Sgt. William J. Woitowicz was just 23 when he was killed last week in Afghanistan after coming under enemy fire.

The Department of Defense said Woitowicz died while on patrol in the northwest province of Badghis. He joined the Marines after his graduation from Groton-Dunstable High School in 2007, and went on to serve with the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Regiment, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

On Thursday, a funeral mass was held for Woitowicz at St. Catherine's Church in Westford.
