He's Back: Bill Weld Says He 'Can't Sit ... On The Sidelines' Any Longer, Eyes 2020 Primaries
Play
Bill Weld, the former two-term governor of Massachusetts, announced on Friday in New Hampshire that he's launching a presidential exploratory committee. Weld is the first Republican to challenge President Trump.
"We have a president whose priorities are skewed towards promotion of himself rather than toward the good of the country. He may have great energy and considerable raw talent, but he does not use them in ways that promote democracy, truth, justice, and equal opportunity for all," Weld said at an event in Bedford, N.H., on Friday morning.
If he decides to pursue the Republican nomination, Weld would face a big challenge.
He represents the moderate wing of the Republican Party at a time when large majorities of Republicans support the president.
"I believe that in a Republican primary the president is going to get 95-plus percent no matter who runs against him, " said Stephen Stepanek, chairman of the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.
On the other hand, a Morning Consult poll released this week, found that one-third of Republicans support a primary challenge to the president.
Weld is a Republican again — and he might run for office again — this time, against Trump.
