This is the Radio Boston rundown for August 5, 2021. Tiziana Dearing is our host.

  • Much of Acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey's early tenure has been defined by two policing scandals she inherited: the firing of Police Commissioner Dennis White, who years ago was accused of assaulting two women, and a review of how Officer Patrick Rose was allowed to remain on the police force for 22 years after he was accused of child rape. Janey asserts her handling of both cases shows her leadership as mayor is "(more) transparent than anyone that I can think of in recent history." She said that here on Radio Boston in May. A new WBUR investigation challenges that claim — and we discuss with WBUR's Ally Jarmanning. We also hear from Sophia Hall, an attorney with Lawyers for Civil Rights.
  • Businesses across the state are weighing the pros and cons of requiring their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. However, some businesses are taking that a step further by requiring patrons to be vaccinated, too. First, WBUR State House reporter Steve Brown joins us to talk about the potential for state-wide vaccine mandates. Later, we take listener calls with Lou Woolf, CEO of Hebrew Seniorlife, a senior healthcare organization requiring all employees to be vaccinated, and Matt Smith, managing director of Cambridge's Club Passim, who will require all employees, performers, and patrons to be vaccinated starting tomorrow.
  • The NFL preseason starts tonight, kicking off another season sure to be affected by COVID. With the Patriots set to play their first preseason game next week, there have been some interesting developments. Radio Boston's Chris Citorik joins us to check the score. We also hear from Ben Volin, Senior NFL Writer for the Boston Globe.

This program aired on August 5, 2021.
