Boston City Council approved additional funding for a controversial police intelligence unit this week.

Supporters of the funding for the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, including Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox and Mayor Michelle Wu, say the center is a key policing tool that's undergone reforms to address concerns about discrimination.

Opponents, including all five Black and Latino Boston city councilors, say the BRIC still engages in racial profiling.

Radio Boston talks about the funding and controversy with WBUR reporter Walter Wuthmann, the former Managing Editor of the Bay State Banner Yawu Miller and Tito Jackson, former Boston City Councilor and CEO of Apex Noire Cannabis.

This segment aired on October 6, 2023.
