For the first time in 40 years, new families seeking shelter in Massachusetts are not being given emergency housing. That's because on Thursday, the number of households in the state emergency shelter system hit a new cap of 7,500 families set by Gov. Maura Healey. Additional households over are now added to a waitlist.

Radio Boston hears the latest from WBUR's Gabrielle Emanuel, plus learns what the need for housing looks like now from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Catholic Charities.

This segment aired on November 13, 2023.
