The leader of the Massachusetts Republican Party says it will back Donald Trump if he becomes the Republican nominee for president.

As the election year gets underway, Trump is facing criminal charges and attempts to keep him off the ballot in some states because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

On WBUR's Radio Boston, chair Amy Carnevale acknowledged the "extraordinary times" surrounding this year's presidential race.

"At the end of the day, the Republican Party of Massachusetts would like to see a Republican elected President and Joe Biden not continue to serve another term, so we will support the Republican nominee."

Trump has won both Republican contests so far: the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.

The Massachusetts primary is on March 5. A judge said that Trump's name can appear on the state's primary ballot after an effort to remove his name.
