Officials are incentivizing developers to convert empty offices into housing

20:31

Office vacancies in Boston have doubled since the first quarter of 2020, to 16.6%, according to CBRE research. Meanwhile, the state has set aside $15 million to help turn those empty buildings into residential units — with more money potentially coming from a housing bond bill.

WBUR's Simón Rios looks into the feasibility of commercial-to-residential conversions. Also joining Radio Boston is Tim Love, architect at Utile Architecture and Planning, which is one of the contributors to a study that looked at building conversion in Boston; and Greg Vasil, chief executive of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board.

This segment aired on July 10, 2024.
