How WBUR's new fiction podcast engages kids in climate solutions

Sea levels in Massachusetts are rising. By 2030, state officials project they will be as much as one foot above the level they were in 2000.

WBUR's new podcast, The Midnight Rebellion, is set in a extreme version of that future.

The podcast tells the story of 12-year-old Joule Watts-Green. She accidentally steps through her mom's time machine into an unrecognizable Boston, where floods and storms have destroyed the city. Listeners can help Joule return home and even rewind some of the climate impacts through the choices they make at the end of each episode.

Senior producer Dean Russell joins WBUR's Morning Edition to discuss how he made the interactive podcast.

The Midnight Rebellion premieres on Earth Day (April 22) wherever you get your podcasts. You can also listen to the episodes at wbur.org/midnight.

This segment airs on April 22, 2026. Audio will be available after the broadcast.
