Students, faculty, and members of the community gathered at Boston University, where Martin Luther King, Jr. received his PhD from the School of Theology in 1953, for the school's 19th annual commemoration of Dr. King's life and legacy on January 19, 2004.

The theme of this year's commemoration program was "Re-engaging the Great Divide: Education and Hope." The keynote speaker was Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice Roderick Ireland, the first African-American to sit on that court.

This week's show featured excerpts of the program's opening remarks by Kenneth Elmore, Dean of Students at Boston University, followed by the speech delivered by Justice Roderick Ireland.

This program aired on January 25, 2004.
