Dismal figures from the Commerce Department paint a new picture of the economy. Gross domestic product shrank by a third in the second quarter, as restaurants and retailers closed their doors to try to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Unemployment claims also mounted on Thursday, forecasting more trouble to come.
