Houses of worship across Massachusetts are allowed to open under new guidance from the state, but the largest mosque in Massachusetts will stay closed for now.

The mosque at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury will not be open this weekend to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

Executive Director Amr Alfass said more time is needed to prepare the facility.

"We cannot risk the health right now, and we cannot reinforce social distancing, when people are hungry to return to the mosque and house of worship," Alfass said.

He said the mosque can sometimes see more than 5,000 people for the end of the holiday.

State rules say houses of worship can only be open at 40% capacity right now.
