We're less than a week out from Halloween, which means it's time to queue up the beloved 1998 film, "Practical Magic." The movie is based on the novel by longtime Cambridge resident and author of dozens of best-selling books, Alice Hoffman. The story follows the Owens family — a clan of witches befallen by a curse that kills the ones they love.

Now, Hoffman's out with a prequel to the best-seller. It's called "The Rules of Magic," and it's set a generation before the Owens sisters, in the tumultuous 1960s.
