These days, heroines can be easy to spot on the silver screen. From those with superhuman powers, like Captain Marvel to more subtle incarnations, like mother Marmee March advising her daughter Jo, in Little Women.

But for the women of myth and fairy tales, the path to heroism was not so clear.

So, how did we get here, and how do we recast those ancient stories? We take listener with Maria Tatar, the author of "The Heroine with 1001 Faces" and the chair of the Program in Folklore and Mythology at Harvard University.

This segment aired on October 21, 2021.
