Medway family that fled Gaza never imagined the war would be raging one year later

09:38

One year ago, Palestinian Americans and Massachusetts locals Abood Okal, Wafaa Abuzayda  and their one year old son Yousef, were visiting family in Gaza when the war between Israel and Hamas began.

In November, the family safely returned home to Medway, after 27 days trapped inside Gaza. In a series of audio messages throughout the ordeal, Okal described the dire conditions residents in the area dealt with during the bombardment by the Israeli military, including a lack of food, fuel and water.

One year since the war in Gaza began, Abood said he's still coming to terms with the experience and his feelings of survivor's guilt.

WBUR's Senior Correspondent and host Deborah Becker joins Radio Boston to share more from her latest conversation with Abood Okal.

This segment aired on October 7, 2024.
