This article is more than 2 years old.

State data show more than 1,000 businesses in Massachusetts have faced complaints that they failed to protect workers sufficiently from the coronavirus.

WBUR's investigative team has been examining the complaints and found four industries comprise the overwhelming majority of complaints resulting in violations of state standards: retail, restaurants, gyms, and salons.

As we face a holiday season critical to small business survival, and increasing calls to shut businesses down again during a second infection surge, what's behind the complaints, and are businesses, on balance, keeping employees safe?

We break it all down with WBUR's Shannon Dooling.

This segment aired on December 14, 2020.
