New year, new goals, new can't-miss events
What do a "rage room," a thought-provoking play, and sandwich recipes of yesteryear have in common? They're all recommendations from Candice Springer, assistant director of WBUR CitySpace, for kicking off 2025.
Candice joins Darryl to discuss these events and experiences, as well as share personal goals for the new year that just might inspire some of your own.
Out and About in Greater Boston
Letz Rage
"You can go in, you can suit up, and you can smash the heck out of things," Candice Springer says of this "rage room" in Fitchburg. But she also notes, "They also have a paint splatter room. So if you just want to throw paint all over the wall and create visual art — if that's the kind of vibe, de-stress in an artistic way — you can do that!"
Dancing with the Stars Live!
Worcestor native and recent Dancing with the Stars competitor Stephen Nedoroscik — AKA "Pommel Horse Guy" — is co-hosting the show's national tour, which is making a stop in Boston with two performances at the Boch Center on January 16 and 17.
"Ain't No Mo'" from Speakeasy Stage and Front Porch Arts Collective
"What if the United States government offered Black Americans a one-way plane ticket back to Africa?" That, Candice says, is the premise of the thought-provoking, Tony-nominated play "Ain't No Mo'," which is being produced by Speakeasy Stage and Front Porch Arts Collective and will be onstage at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End from January 10 through February 8.
Museum of Illusions Boston
"The premise of this is to explore the mysteries of vision, the science of perception, and the power of the human brain in a playful and interactive environment," Candice says of this new museum, located near Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston. "Go for whimsy!," Candice exclaims, and she recommends going in a group.
January Highlights at WBUR CitySpace
Sandwiches of History: Live!
In celebration of his new cookbook, social media sensation Sandwiches of History creator Barry Enderwick is hitting the road to share the history of his wildly popular internet deep-dive on all things sandwich. The live show will feature a special guest star, and sandwich making and tasting with audience-suggested “plus ups,” Enderwick’s signature technique for taking good sandwiches and making them great.
Jack the Whipper (with a guest appearance by Ses Carny)
Former WBUR anchor Jack Lepiarz — AKA Jacques ze Whipper — and Ses Carny are back for another year performing their acclaimed "Secret Show." And this year, it's even longer than ever before! It's what happens when circus meets improv in a show that is easily the strangest thing to ever appear at CitySpace. Candice says, "Whether you can come in person or you live really far away and you want to watch a live stream of the show, this is your one chance a year to be able to see it!"
