There was a significant development Tuesday in the investigation into the shooting and car chase outside Brigham and Women's hospital earlier this month that left a valet severely injured and a man dead.

On Feb. 7, police in Brookline shot and killed 41-year-old Juston Root after he had allegedly pulled a gun on a security guard near the Brigham and then fled by car.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins today announced what Root was carrying was not a working firearm, and that a police officer shot the hospital valet.
